The Bund (Wai Tan)
The Bund (Wai Tan) is a water view in Shanghai downtown. The area focus on a part of Zhongshan Road within the previous Shanghai International Settlement. And it goes along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern section of Huangpu District. Furthermore, this area turns towards the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong region. It is not only the symbol of Shanghai but also the most popular attraction there.

banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States and so on. Besides, the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club were also there.
In the 1940s, the Bund housed many headquarters of major financial institutions of China. It includes the “Big Four” national banks. However, due to the victory of the communist, many institutions were moved out in the 1950s. So were the hotels, clubs and the statues of the colonial figures.
With the open economic policy in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Bund gradually returned to its previous uses. Financial organizations and hotels resumed again. In 1986, the Dutch Architect Paulus Snoeren changed the streetscape of the Bund a lot. In addition, it had ten more lanes much wider than before.
In the 1990s, the government of Shanghai extended the Bun from Yan’an Road to Zhabei Road. It was for the purpose of promoting the tourism and extending the land value.
In the 21st century, more traffic changes having been happening. For example, Waibaidu Bridge was renovated. A new tunnel also showed up.
