Gulangyu Island Overview

Gulangyu Island is in southwest of Xiamen city, Fujian Province, China. The island is a pedestrian-only place off the Xiamen coast. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area covers 2 km2. And it takes only five minutes from the city center by ferry. In spite of the small population on the island, still it attracts millions of domestic tourists every year. Thus the island has become one of the hottest tourist place in China. Currently around 20,000 people live on the island.

Cars and bicycles are prohibited on the Gulangyu Island. However, they only allow tiny electric buggies or electric public service vehicles. Tourists can get to Gulangyu from Xiamen ferry terminal. Only locals can use a shorter ferry which only needs 5 minutes to arrive.

In the day time, tourists and non-locals have to take the ferry from the Dongdu International Cruise Terminal to either Nei Cuo Ao or Kulangsu Town. It costs CNY 35 and needs 20 minutes to arrive. After 6 PM, they can take the ferry from Lundu Terminal 2. It drops off at San Qiu Tian Terminal in Kulangsu Town. Moreover, it is much more convenient than before.

That service is available all the night with a cost of CNY35 from 6Pm to the midnight. And the boat comes every 20 minutes. In contrast, it only costs CNY 5 from midnight to 7 am. The ferry leaves every hour.

Gulangyu Island is famous for its beaches, bending lanes and different-style architectures. According to the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), The island is China’s 5A National Scenic Spot. At the same time, it is also one of the ten most famous attractions within the province.

1. Piano Museum

The island is China’s only piano museum. Thus it has won the praise of “Piano Island” or “The Town of Pianos”.

2. Marine World

You can explore the mysterious marine world.

3. Subtropical Garden

Many different of plants and flowers are available there.

4. Xiamen Museum

The museum shows local cultural relics.
