Shangri-La Essences & Trekking – Potatso National Park

Potatso National Park is in Shangri-La county of Yunnan province in China. It is around 22km southwest of Shangri-La city center. The park covers an area of 1300 square meters. And the park is the first national park up to the standards of International Union for Conservation of Nature. It was open to public on June 25, 2007.

The park is famous for its well-kept primitive scenery. It is dotted with lakes, forests, brooks and meadows. Moreover, many rare species of animals and plants live there. At the same time, the Tibetan culture and customs are also the reason to attract travelers.

The Potatso National Park scenic area contains three sections. Namely they are Bita Lake ,Shudu Lake and Militang Alpine Pasture. There are sightseeing busses running among these attractions. Because the Bita Lake is a holy place for Tibetan Buddhists. They walk around the lake clockwise for good luck. Thus it is better for the visitors to do the same thing. The tourist route is around 69 kilometers. It takes 4 to 6 hours to finish seeing all the spots.

Potatso National Park Main Sights

1. Bita Lake

The Bita Lake has a 2.5-mle-long path where visitor can walk. Some oak trees and firs grow on the two sides of the road. Furthermore, there is a tiny island in the lake. Legend has it that the island is the place where Tibetan hero King Gesar killed the monsters. Many fish live in the lake. Seeing the lake is a good sign for Tibetans.

2. Shudu Lake

Shudu Lake water is very clear. There are always wild ducks hanging out in a group in the lake. Beside the lakes, visitors can see the cattle and sheep.

3. Militang Alpine Pasture

Militang Alpine Pasture is about 10 minutes away for Shudu lake by driving.
There are yaks and sheep wandering on the pasture along with farmers’ houses.
