This 5-night tour will introduce you to central Tibet and take you to the three biggest ancient cities: Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse. By visiting these places, you will get an overview of Tibet’s religion, cultural treasures, and dream-like landscapes. The highlights of this tour will be the Tibetan architectural treasure, the Potala Palace, Jokhang and Sera, Holy Yamdrok Lake and Karo glacier as well as Tashilhunpo Monastery which stores the biggest copper Buddha statue in the world.

What you can expect

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa
You will be picked-up at the airport or train station and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, you can take a rest. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the city.

Day 2: Lhasa Day Tour (Potala Palace and Borkhor Street) (B,D)
First you will visit the Potala Palace - the winter palace of Dalai Lama. It has been used since the 7th century. The most valuable are gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas and meditation Cave. Then head to Jokhang temple which was founded by the 33rd great king of Tibet in the 7th century, in order to promote the Buddhist religion. You can also do kora (circling the Barkor street) with pilgrims and locals and buy the souvenirs.

Day 3: Lhasa Day Tour (Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery) (B)
You will visit Drepung monastery which was one of the “three great” Gelug monasteries of Tibet and was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge, one of the Tsongkhapa’s main disciples. Ganden palace is used as Dalai lama’s palace in Drepung before moving to the Potala palace. Afternoon you will visit the Sera Monastery which is also one of the Gelug monasteries, and was founded at 1419 by Jamchen Chojey. Make sure not to miss the Monks debating at around 3 - 5 in the afternoon.

Day 4: Lhasa -Yamdrok-Karola Glacier-Gyantse- Shigatse (B)
You will drive from Lhasa to Gyantse. On the way, you will pass the Gampala pass (4790 m), and get a glimpse of Yamdrok-tso (4400m), which is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains. Then you will drive west towards Gyantse. In Gyantse, you will visit the famous Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum. After one and a half hour's drive, you will arrive in Shigatse, which is the second largest city in Tibet.
Overnight at Shigatse 3-star or 4-star hotel (Option).

Day 5: Shigatse - Lhasa (B)
Today, you will visit Tashilunpo monastery of Gelug Sect, the seat of the Panchen Lama, built in 1447. The monastery houses a giant statue of the Maitreya Buddha - the biggest gilded statue of Maitreya (Buddha of the future) in the world and a tomb of all the Panchen Lama, containing jewels and gold. In the afternoon, you will drive back to Lhasa, which will take around 6 hours. We will also have the option to take the train back to Lhasa if you prefer. If you need this, please inform us at least 10 days in advance for us to secure the train tickets booking.

Day 6: Depart from Lhasa (B)
You will be transferred to the airport or train station.

  • Book at least 20 days in advance so tour operator may attain your Tibet Permit. Tibet Permit will be delivered to customers' delivery address in one city of China.
  • Travelers are required to provide photocopy of passports and China L visas in advance
  • Please Notice: Customers' airport pick-up and drop-off in Lhasa need be arranged by tour supplier. If customers fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu, please do not apply for China L Visa in advance, because customers need apply for their Tibet Group Visa from China Embassy in Kathmandu via travel agency. Before that, they need ask for invitation letter from tour supplier.
