General

The Tsurphu And Nenang Monastery Tour is a great way to spend one meaningful day outside Lhasa and learn about Tibetan Buddhism. They are the two of the most important Kagyu school monasteries in Tibet. We will visit Tsurphu Monastery in the morning, where we will explore its history, architecture and scenic surroundings. In the afternoon, we will visit Nenang Monastery and see the important religious relics inside. This Lhasa monastery tour gives you a wonderful opportunity to witness the splendid religious life and customs of the pious Tibetan people.

Tsurphu Monastery

Tsurphu Monastery is the seat of Karmapa and a Karma Kagyu sect monastery located 70km outside Lhasa. The monastery sits at an altitude of 4300m and faces snow mountains towards south. The 300-square-meter complex has walls up to 4 meters thick. Tsurphu Monastery hosts an eventful celebration during Saga Dawa Festival, where people drink barley beer, dance and establish a great Thangka painting on the platform across the river from the monastery. The Tsurphu kora is 4km and can be a challenging journey because of its high altitude. Tsurphu Monastery is also the starting point of a popular trekking route towards Yangpachen. You can check out our offering of this tour here.

Nenang Monastery

Nenang Monastery is the seat of the Nenang Pawo, an important tulku of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. While much smaller than Tsurphu Monastery, it boasts several precious Tibetan Buddhist relics such as a large stupa of the 10th Pawo Rinpoche, two smaller stupas of the 16th Karmapa and the 5th Pawo Rinpoche.

What you can expect

Our English speaking local Tibetan tour guide will meet you at House of Shambhala hotel lobby or Lhasa Ganggyan Hotel lobby around 9:00 AM.  If you have a special request for meetup location we can happily accommodate that as well.

We will drive 70km west of Lhasa and arrive at our destination region. The two monasteries are close to each other.  We will spend a considerable amount of time at both monasteries seeing religious relics and appreciating the architecture. After a full day of sightseeing, we will return to downtown Lhasa in late afternoon. If you had a great time with us, we welcome you to check out more Tibetan culture tours that we offer.
